In 1805-6, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark wintered at Fort Clatsop after their trail-blazing journey from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. Their expendition across the North American continent (between the Spanish possessions on the south and British Canada to the north) provided the first detailed knowledge of the American Northwest.
