Use the camera's self-timer and the fastest speed you can to minimize camera shake, which will be considerable; fast film will be a help. You will have to prefocus the lens, but you should be able to estimate that accurately enough. You may have to try a couple of times to get this setup properly adjusted. To photograph thatch-sheltered monuments, off-camera flash is your best bet (at sites where flash is permitted).

Central America on a Shoestring, by Nancy Keller, Tom Brosnahan, and Rob Rachowiecki, is published by Lonely Planet Publications (1992).
